Book Review: The One and Only

Emily Giffin is one of my favorite authors. When she comes out with a new book, I can't read it fast enough!

The One & Only was OK. Honestly, when I finished it really just made me want to go back and re-read Something Borrowed and Something Blue (my faves of hers). I just couldn't get past the weirdness of the father - daughter like relationship Shea and Coach started out with, turning into a relationship. I also didn't think that Shea and Lucy's relationship was as strong as Emily has written in the past. It was kind of a Rachel/Darcy feel of a friendship (polar opposite, long time friends), but less believable. Amazon's description of the book states: Shea’s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she’s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most—and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets.

I would qualify falling in love with your best friend's dad as "upending" but the "unsettling truths" part was a bit of a stretch. What happened between her and Ryan was predictable, and when she had strife with Coach, it seemed weak and misplaced. I didn't hate the book....just not my fave!
What I did like about the book was that it was based in Texas, so it seemed very familiar every time she would talk about going somewhere. Also, the football. For a "girly" book....it talked quite a bit about football, which was awesome! (71 Days until OU Football starts!!) Best part of the book: the fictional team despised the Longhorns!! It made me smile every. single. time.

I'm now reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, and will let you know what I think!!

Humungo Announcement + Friday Faves 14

Drum Roll Folks!!

Jake and I are getting a puppy....TOMORROW!!!! Whoop!!

We have talked about getting one since day 3 of dating. And now, finally, after 202 days of being married...we are getting our pup!

I will for sure be sharing pictures...and lots of them, soon!

As for now, I'm going to share my favorite pics of my first dog love....Zoe!! Zoe will be our puppy's cousin! And no, Zoe is NOT being replaced, just joined :)

This was Zoe being the ultimate attention whore at the wedding! Anywhere I went, she went. It is seriously one of my most favorite memories of all time!!!

My friend Keith gave me this painting he made of Zoe. He seriously gives the best gifts!!

Happy Friday Guys! Promise I'll get to posting more than once a week soon! And thanks for allowing me to do dumb stuff, like use my blog as a shrine to my niece dog :)

Freaky Friday Faves Week 13

Ok, it CANNOT be a coincidence that my 13th week of Friday Faves fall on Friday the 13th!! As a lover of the creepy and crawly....I was very excited when I realized this!! So, in honor of the occasion, I'll share with you my favorite shows and movies that straight up freak me out (in the best ways possible!).

My sisters and I LOVE scary stuff. I have some seriously fond memories of us sitting on our beds reading scary stories and watch Are You Afraid of the Dark.

(FYI: these are NOT in any type of order)

1. American Horror Story

Um, I'm sorry....what? I remember when I saw the previews to the 3rd season because it freaked me out so much!! I actually have issues watching this show by myself...and unfortunately I married a big baby when it comes to this kind of stuff.

2. Criminal Minds

Welcome to my favorite show on earth. It's not always scary, but it is usually delightfully suspenseful. I would say that I enjoy suspense over gory type horror any day.

3. Joy Ride

There is just something about being chased that gets my heart rate going. Plus Steve Zahn (if you haven't seen The Perfect Getaway, do it) makes creepy funny, and Paul Walker...well you know...he's easy on the eyes.

4. Walking Dead

Walking Dead isn't the scariest show out there...but there are a few episodes where I jumped out of my skin a little...but it is just an all out good show.

5. Final Destination

The sequels get to be a bit much...but this movie makes me sentimental to my high school days....

6. The Conjuring

Possession isn't my favorite type of scary, but there are always exceptions. This being one of them.

Vera Farmiga is in this and plays creepy well! She also plays creepy in two other faves: Bates Motel and Orphan.

Fun fact: my first scary movie was Tremors. I might be the only person ON EARTH who was scared by that...but I think any 5 year old would be! (Thanks, Dad!)

Calligraphy Class

Happy Rainy Sunday!

So one of my latest obsessions has been calligraphy. My Instagram has been filled with any hand lettering accounts I can possibly find. (That, and about 12 English bulldog accounts...it's an issue, I know!)

My friend Taryn and I decided to take Lauren Essl's beginning calligraphy class at Chirps & Cheers in Edmond. It was a blast! I highly recommend taking one of her classes, and I will for sure be taking one of her advanced classes! Lauren was so nice and I had fun picking her brain for 3 hours while I learned my lower case abc's.

I took her alphabet and made my own practice sheets.

Here was my first writing project. Not the most sentimental birthday card, but it's the prettiest!

Chirps and Cheers has a pretty dang cute mascot as well!

Check out Lauren's online classes as well!

Friday Faves Week 12

Happy Friday!

Thanks for letting me cheat last week. Our garage sale went great!

This week my Friday Faves are going to be my favorite Pins of the week. I've seen a few other bloggers do this, so I thought I'd give it a try for this week!

I don't know about you guys, but I've got a ton of broken jewelry just sitting there...waiting for the day that I get around to fixing them. (Yeah, right.)

Could there be a more perfect summer maxi? I think not!

I'm a sucker for any and all things watermelon. It is far and beyond my favorite fruit!! Next chance I get, I will be making these! Also, I NEED that strawberry huller!

Let me state that I will never make this cake. Cake decorating is not my craft of choice (or talent). But I can look, admire and complement the artist! That is one dang cute cake!!!

Gold leafing might be one of my favorite craft mediums. I find it pretty relaxing. I've got few requirements in life: gold, shiney and soft. Gold leaf isn't really soft...but nothing's perfect!

Hope these pins inspire your weekend and add a little pretty to your life!

Waffle Champion

So in a quest to try as many new restaurants as possible, my nearest and dearest are truly suffering the consequences!

A few weeks ago I dragged my sis Molly out for brunch. Do you guys pay for your hair cuts and colors in brunches? You don't? Well, it's awesome...and I highly suggest you get/find/buy/steal a sibling who is in the cosmetic field.

I had been wanting to try Waffle Champion for a while. It was good; I like waffles, and I enjoy fun foods like this. I wouldn't call it "the best" of anything....but it is a fun specialty place!

I had my first taste of chicken and waffles. I'm really into mixing salty and sweets....especially when those sweets are honey and the salty is fried chicken.

Molly got a waffle with chorizo and egg, and was awesome!

And of course we had to split some waffle fries.

Fun place and fun food. I guess it was worth it for my highlights!

Thanks for always making my hair awesome, Mo! Love my seester!

Austin Weekend

A few weeks ago we went to Austin for our friend Delaney's graduation.

Hil, Jake & I made the trek down and if you know us AT ALL, you know what our first stop was once we entered the Lone Star State.

Rosa's...HOLLA! It never gets old.

On Saturday we went shopping on South Congress. Hil took one look at Hey Cupcake! and we knew we had no choice but to go. We tried a strawberry, lemon and carrot cake and the flavors were a-mah-zing. Score wise, flavor gets a 10, moistness gets a 6. It was pretty dense, so I'm sure that wasn't helping much in that department either. I'm going to say 2nd or 3rd best cupcake I've ever had.

Saturday night we celebrated Dee's graduation from that other school at J. Blacks. The Graves have been a second family to us for over 15 years! We LOVE The Graves!

Sunday morning before we parted ways, we all went to Walton's Fancy and Staple. It's one of Sandra Bullock's Austin restaurants.

Guys, seriously one of my most favorite restaurants! The food was amazing.

It had a bakery and a small floral boutique attached as well. Sandy, you had me succulents, girl.

For her graduation gift, I gave Dee a print from my fave artist Evelyn Henson

She just did an OKC one too....I will be buying it soon!

Such a fun weekend in Austin. Even though it's home of that other school, it's a pretty fun city.
